There’s so much conflicting stuff out there on the net. And most of it’s absolute hogwash. So in this article I want to set the record straight. Let’s delve into the most common misunderstood topics one by one.

1. Dog training takes lots of time

– Simply not true. When you know what you are doing, dog training is actually incredibly simple. You don’t have to spend hours at dog obedience classes, walking around in circles in the rain…this is old school training. For most dogs this is so unnecessary and such a waste of your time. If you are doing this and still struggling at home with your dog then there is simply something going wrong with the basics. Dogs are simple animals, they love to walk and exercise at least once a day but for great periods of time a happy dog will also sleep for long periods.

Want the solution? Just keep reading or just <<CLICK HERE>>

2. There is only one pack leader in the home

– Dogs can respect all the humans in the home and see them as the pack leaders if you train them that way. I suggest that you want your dog to respect everyone so that they will listen to commands no matter who’s home or not. That a dog will only have one master is not true. Of course dogs will respect those people who are calm and gentle and actually know what they are doing more than those who don’t.

A great site where you can watch how to become the pack leader is

Doggy Dan’s dog training site <<CLICK HERE>>

3. Attending puppy school is really important

– Puppy school is not as effective as many owners think. Many puppy schools are simply not a great investment. Far too many rush their new puppies off to the local class where they sit around with a couple of other puppies for an hour a week learning very little. At the end of 4 weeks, owners feel that they have “graduated” from puppy class but have actually learnt nothing more than a “sit” command and met a few other pups. Unfortunately most of the really important training is left out.

Getting important knowledge is more important than attending puppy school.

4. Quality dog training is expensive

– One of the best dog and puppy training packages available on the internet is set at a price that anyone can afford. Sadly most people spend a fortune for very poor advice simply because they don’t know where to go to get great training. Many people have spent thousands on pre-puppy school, puppy school, dog obedience classes, agility, dog behaviorists and they still have nightmare issues with their dog. The reason is that they still have not come across any quality dog training.

Doggy Dan’s site is one of the best puppy and dog training programs on the market and he has set it at a very reasonable price. To take a look  << CLICK HERE>>

5. You can train a dog using only Positive reinforcement

– Positive training is great, however it’s not a complete solution! Sometimes you do also need to step in put a stop to unwanted behavior. The other thing that’s crucial in training your dog is to understand how to gain their respect in a loving and gentle way. This doesn’t mean that you need to shout or hurt you dog but you do need to do more than just reward their good actions. In many ways it’s like training a child, you praise the good however you also need to step in quickly and stop the bad actions maybe using timeout or something that will make a child think twice before doing it again. Positive reinforcement, such as treats, has a place in dog training but too often it’s used incorrectly which creates more problems than it solves.

6. You should never use food treats

– Food treats used at the right time, in the right way, and in the correct situations is one of the post powerful training tools. Doggy Dan has an excellent grasp on how to use treats and demonstrates this throughout his dog training program. With over 250 videos you get to see the few times that he uses them and how effective food treats are, but also you learn the art of fading them out over time.

To check out his dog training program << CLICK HERE >>

7. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks

– Dogs are always ready to change at any age. Of course prevention is better than cure and it’s often easier to train a dog correctly from the start. Many older dogs are actually just waiting for you to show them a new way to act. They actually want you to give them the gift of early retirement and allow them to switch off and relax. Of course to do this you first need to know what they are looking for and how to then communicate it to them.

And guess what…Doggy Dan’s program shows you exactly how to do it right <<HERE>>

8. Hard work and practice is all you need

– There’s a right way and a wrong way. Very often doing things the wrong way will simply never work. Do it the right way and your dog will respond in a matter of minutes. Dog training is not about hard work, spending hours training your dog. They are smart animals and will listen to you if you’re the pack leader, and understand how to communicate to them. Great dog trainers have learnt to work smart, not hard.

9. Little dogs are easier to train than big dogs

– Size has nothing to do with it. There are very big dogs who are very easy going and not difficult to train and there are some very difficult smaller dogs. Just like people, you can’t generalize how people will behave by their size!

10. Most dogs who cause trouble are stupid

– Wrong. Most dogs causing trouble are very intelligent, even by a dogs standard. Very often it’s the very clever, determined dogs who refuse to give up that cause us the most frustration. This is where we need to improve our own game and learn a little more about what is really going on with these magnificent creatures.

Feel like you are missing a crucial piece of the jigsaw? Dog not listening? Feel like you are struggling against them the whole time?

Puppy Toilet Training

Dog and Puppy Training Techniques That Work

Is there anything worse?

You wake up in the morning the sun is shining and its another beautiful day. You come out of your bedroom and discover your puppy rolling around in his poo! Hmmm.

Its everywhere.

It’s going to be 30-45 minute clean up minimum. You’re going to be running late today for sure.

Is there anything more frustrating?

You take your puppy or 1 year old dog outside to pee-pee. After they go pee-pee, you return inside. Within seconds of coming inside your dog decides to continue with a little sprinkle all over your new rug.

Aaggghh!

Surely toilet training a puppy or a dog should not take this long or be so hard?

You’re right. It shouldn’t and it isn’t. The thing is this…

There’s no magic wand but there are a heap of little tricks that will turn your puppy’s toileting around and you are probably not using most of them.

The crazy thing is that most people don’t do any of these things because they have never been told exactly what to do. Nobody has ever explained how important these little things are when you are toilet training your puppy.

And they are all simple and all logical. So let me point you in the right direction with a couple of them so you can get the idea and then I’ll tell you about the most awesome toilet training resource that I found for those of you who are interested.

1. Staying calm:

Firstly the thing that you have to accept is that you are responsible. Like training a young child or baby to use a potty. You can’t blame them for not being toilet trained and take your frustrations out on them.

In fact, it can really set you back. Becoming angry, shouting at your puppy, being annoyed will do nothing to encourage them to relax and follow your commands to toilet outside!

Imagine trying to go to the toilet with an angry frustrated person standing there staring at you!

So all of that rubbish about rubbing a dog’s nose in it to show them not to do it again, is simply old school and so out of date. People who do this sort of stuff have completely missed the point.

Think about it…

Why do you think your puppy pee-peed in the house?

Because they needed to go. Right?

They were holding on, probably bursting, needed to go and so they thought, “OK, I gotta go pee-pee…like NOW!”

And if the door was shut as well, then what do you expect?

Your puppy is not vindictive, or trying to wind you up.

So when you rub your puppies nose in it…they are still not sure where they are supposed to go.

Repeat…They are still not sure where they are supposed to go.

Got it yet?

So when you start telling your puppy off for going pee-pee in front of the couch all you are doing is telling your puppy that this is not the right place. Try somewhere else…

But…

“They are still not sure where they are supposed to go!”

That’s right. You need to show them. You need to train them. That’s why its called toilet training.

2. Stay focused on the goal:

Its odd that the biggest mistake that people make with toilet training is the most important one. Most people take their eye off the goal too soon and start telling poor puppy off when they get it wrong. The secret is this…

Keep rewarding your puppy with amazing treats every time they go toilet in the right place…

That’s right. Every single time. With amazing treats. For a long time!

Nothing will motivate your puppy faster than rewarding them with a couple of amazing tasting little treats immediately after they have finished.

Notice I say immediately. Not 30 seconds later… It should be within 2 seconds. Too late and the connection to the pee-pee they just did will be lost. Get your treat in their mouth quick and they will very quickly start to link the two.

The Ah-Ha moment is when your puppy thinks… “So if I pee-pee on the grass you give me the most amazing treat?” “OK…Deal!”

Unfortunately most of us will reward for a week or two and then stop. We forget, get bored, run out of treats or can be bothered.

One little tip I heard on a great 40 minute toilet training audio the other day is to leave a jar with treats outside by the pee-pee area so that even if you forget to take treats out with you there are already some at hand.

3. It does take time

Remember that puppies are still young and small. They are still learning and it will take time. Anyone with young children will tell you…

Toilet training takes TIME and PATIENCE! Sometimes 3 years or more for young children.

Think about this for a second.

How old is your puppy? 16 weeks! Children can’t even lift their own heads at that age and we become frustrated that our puppy isn’t perfectly toilet trained by that age…

So take a breath and relax. The good news is that you can do it and your puppy is perfectly normal.

So focus on the successes and learn to quickly put the mistakes behind you. It’s great learning for life. Look to see what you could have done differently but don’t beat yourself up. We’ve all been there and the good news is that its not forever.

4. The rug

This is just a little tip I heard from that toilet training audio file I mentioned earlier that I’ll tell you about in a second. It made me smile because it is exactly what happens all the time.

Here’s the scenario…

Your puppy finds a nice thick piece of rug that is not the carpet. The rug feels nice, a bit like grass and looks like it is a good place to go pee-pee. They go pee-pee or even worse poo-poo!

Unfortunately for you it is your brand new, thick, white, shag pile rug and its very hard to get the stains and smell out of.

Even when carefully cleaned, your puppy can still smell the pee and poo and so now it even smells like a good place to go. Before long your beautiful expensive shag pile rug is a very costly toilet mat.

They secret is simple. Pick it up and put it back down in 6 months time in perfect condition. No stains, no marks, no regrets. Trust me on the shag pile rug. Do not take the chance! It is a very slippery slope.

5. Knowledge is everything:

When it comes to toilet training there really are so many things to think about and you will simply not think of them all on your own. You need to be told the secrets before your toileting goes pear-shaped.

And the best place that I have found by far to get hold of all the tips about dog and puppy training including toilet training is Doggy Dan’s website The Online Dog Trainer.

Inside the site are over 250 videos including a whole section with an amazing 40 minute recording on toilet training your puppy. It’s fantastic and covers off everything that you could possibly want to know.

Here’s a couple of tips to give you an idea of what’s inside.

– Those tricky times. What to do during the night and when you are at work to prevent accidents. How long to leave them and what to leave them with.

– Setting your puppy up to win so that they can’t make mistakes.

– Why some older puppy’s regress at 4 months old and why you need to get them back on track immediately.

– Older dogs. Why much older dogs who are several years old can suddenly start going toilet in the house and what to do to stop it.

– Habit Breaking. How to break an old habit if your puppy is toileting all over the house.

– Crate training. Everything you need to know about crate training your puppy if you choose to use that approach.

Plus all the tips, and advice on every topic to do with toilet training such as cleaning up the mess, feeding, watering and toilet frequency and schedules.

So that’s all for now. As you can see it’s a big topic. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this and that you get a handle on your puppy’s toileting sooner rather than later.

If you really are struggling and want to end all the frustration immediately then I strongly suggest you take a look at Doggy Dan’s site The Online Dog Trainer and check out the Toilet Training section inside the site.

How To Stop Your Dog Pulling On The Leash

Who currently has a weak or sore shoulder from their dog pulling them and yanking them down the street?

Me, me, me, I hear you cry! There are literally millions of people who have to endure their walk with their dog rather than enjoy it.

So why not train your dog to walk by your side without pulling once and then enjoy every walk without any hassle!

Make sense? And the great thing is its not complicated! As with most things worth mastering it can take a little time, but not always. Sometimes it can be a 5 minute turnaround as expert Dog Trainer, Doggy Dan, demonstrates in his video CLICK HERE.

But let me first talk you through some of the really key mistakes that people are making when walking their dog.

Now as I mentioned earlier there are many tricks to walking your dog on the leash correctly so that they walk beside you. And if you have a determined dog, (and they come in both big and small size) you may well need to know all of them before you can master the walk.

But generally speaking, the tips I am about to give you now will really help… So lets get cracking and get into the training.

The most important thing to remember is to keep your dog calm. If your dog is charged up like a raging bull as you head out of the garden gate, like the one in the video then getting them to walk calmly on the leash is going to be a lot harder than if they are calm.

So how do we calm them down? I hear you cry…

Alright, alright, I’m getting to it…

1. Calming your dog down.

Think about your build up to leaving the house. You bring out the leash and BANG! Your sleeping beauty becomes a rocket. They jump up, tail wagging, racing around demanding that you put the leash on them. Now if you simply oblige and put the leash on them they get even more excited!

The reason is simple. You are reinforcing their excited behavior with a reward, the lead. So this behavior gets more and more extreme. They become more excited not less excited.

The same thing is happening as your dog drags you towards the front door, barging their way through first and then pulls you down the garden path. All of this is getting your dog more and more excited. They will be at bursting point when you get onto the path!

So next time you take your dog for a walk, take your time. Pick up the leash and then wait for your dog to calm down. That’s right. Simply carry on doing what you were doing and ignore your dog’s antics. If they don’t calm down simply put the leash away or put it on a table.

This may take a little while, several attempts or quite a long period, but your dog will eventually calm. When they are calm you can try again and repeat until they are totally relaxed as you attach the leash.

This process can be repeated all the way until you are on the path ready to start your walk. Either wait calmly with your dog on the leash until they are calm before progressing or take the leash off and postpone the walk for a few minutes.

It may seem like you’re getting nowhere fast but better to take some time getting this sorted now or you’re going to be dragged around the streets for the next 10 years. The issue will not “self correct”.

Now step two is a simple exercise that involves you turning around when your dog pulls ahead.

2. Change direction

Before you start your walk look at which way your dog is trying to head. If they want to go right, then you turn left. Take a step to the left and repeat this until they are actually taking notice of what you are doing.

On a bigger scale you could simply change direction and go the other way when your dog starts to pull ahead.

Make sure you do this early, don’t wait till your dog is miles out in front. By doing this exercise your dog ends up behind you every time. Again it can take a little time but your dog will get it.

3. Chose an appropriate device

Take a look at some of the different types of devices available to assist you in getting your dog to heel. In the video you can see Doggy Dan using a very special harness where the attachment is under the dogs chin. This is totally different to a traditional harness where the attachment is on the back and the dogs end up pulling like a cart horse.

4. Remember the pack leader leads…

On the walk the pack leader leads from the front. So if you are not the pack leader in your dogs eyes they will really fight for that spot at the front. Its as simple as that. You can’t cheat a dog, especially the strong minded determined ones! Learning to become the pack leader is topic all on it’s own, and is the basis of Doggy Dan’s world-famous training method. He’s developed 5 Golden Rules, which when followed daily, help you become the pack leader in a calm and gentle way. On his video website The Online Dog Trainer, he points out that before any training takes place, you first need to establish yourself as the leader using the 5 rules – and stresses that this is really important in solving almost all dog behavior problems.

5. Lots of extra tips

As I mentioned earlier there are heaps of other tips and tricks such as knowing how and when to give the leash a little pull without going over the top. Understanding when and where to let your dog have some freedom and go sniff and pee pee (after all that’s the point of going for a dog walk isn’t it!)

If you would like to master the walk today then look no further than Doggy Dan’s website The Online Dog Trainer, with over 250 videos. It really is simply the best dog training site around. There are currently 7 excellent videos on how to walk your dog correctly showing you how to deal with every issue and question you may have. And there’s even a 30 minute audio inside the site – so you can listen while you walk!

Everybody wants to enjoy their dog and that includes walking them, so don’t put up with it any longer!

And remember your dog will also be glad when the pulling stops and they can walk calmly by your side!

How To Raise The Perfect Dog

There’s a lot of talk about how to raise the perfect dog. It’s what we all want but the question is… do they exist?

I suppose the answer is a bit like… is there a perfect person? Of course, the answer to that is… Nope!

However there are some pretty great people out there, and there are some really amazing dogs too. So what’s the trick?

This is my best advice.

Before you get hung up about going to puppy school and learning how to do high-fives, roly-polies and the commando crawl, ask yourself this…

Is this what my dream dog does? Is my dream dog basically a performing monkey whom I wheel out when visitors come around so they can say “Wow that’s cool, how clever is he…How did you train him to do that…” and so on and so forth.

The kicker is that in many of these cases the next thing that the dog owner has to do is warn the visitors “Now…don’t go near his food bowl when he’s eating, and careful when you pat him not to go near his head, and keep the children away from his toys..!”

It’s crazy isn’t it?

We spend so much time and effort focusing on how to do commands such as sit and stay but never even think about some of the really important stuff. And when we do it’s often too late.

Want to know why this is so?

Because most dog trainers are stuck doing what everyone else is doing…

And that’s training the sit, the down and the stay! That’s right. Its like sheep, everyone following each other and nobody asking WHY

Think about it… has a dog ever been put to sleep (yes, I am talking about euthanized) because they didn’t do a proper sit? Or because their down command was a bit slow? Or because they had a poor stay? Of course not… nobody really cares about that stuff.

Yet that’s what we all learn at puppy school! WHY?!

But… Aggression? Oh Boy.

More dogs are put to sleep for aggression, barking, growling, and challenging than any other reason. Aggressive to children, owners, strangers – its all bad news.

There is nothing more dangerous than an out of control dog, pulling you along on the leash, ignoring you when you let them off. Never mind the danger to themselves around cars and other dogs.

Yet so few dog trainers show you how to prevent all of this, because very few actually understand it themselves!

Most people’s real idea of a perfect dog, in no particular order, will include all of the following 5 important behaviors:

  1. Calm around all other animals including dogs
  2. Friendly to all people including children
  3. Relaxed and obedient around the home
  4. Amazing at coming when called at the park
  5. A real angel when walking on the leash in public

Hhmmm… I can hear you thinking….You’ve got a point!

Let me guess your next question…

So how do we achieve it?

Well the great news is that it’s not complicated. At least it’s not complicated or tricky anymore… all thanks to Doggy Dan’s The Online Dog Trainer video website.

Inside his website is the most amazing collection of videos showing you exactly how to achieve this kind of ‘perfect’ dog. In fact Doggy Dan shows you through the video diary of 8 week old puppy Moses, guiding you through every stage of achieving all the things I’ve just mentioned.

Doggy Dan has filmed his puppy growing up for an entire year and presented a series of lessons each week that need to learned at that particular stage of the puppy’s life. So you get to watch and train your puppy at exactly the right time, making sure problems don’t manifest later on.

And once your dog is fully grown the site caters for every type of dog problem that you may face later on. In-depth sections on health, food, behavior and training are covered as well.

Doggy Dan’s site is truly amazing with over 250 videos inside. Showing you exactly how to achieve those 5 important behaviors I mentioned earlier… and much, much more!

Tips For Dog Obedience Training

If you keep a dog either for sporting, competing, or simply for leisure, you probably know how significant it is to have him go through dog obedience training. A pet dog that is well behaved is always pleasurable to take along because he is less likely to go wild and cause troubles to other people. You surely don’t want to tag along a dog that barks at everyone and run around therefore scaring away the crowd. If good manners are very important in your home, the same things should also be taught to your pet.

Sure enough, keeping dogs at home should provide your loved ones with enough security and not that they will cause harm on anyone. You will not also like it when your neighbors complain that your pet has ransacked their properties or worse, have bitten someone in the area. Therefore, the more that you should pay attention to having your dog trained properly.

Are you planning to train your dog by yourself? Here are the steps that you need to take note of in dog obedience training. But remember; don’t ever move to the next step when your pet has not yet mastered the previous one!

The difficulty of the commands start from the basics to the most advanced. For starters, teach your pet the easiest instructions first. These are “sit”, “stand”, “stop”, “come”, and the likes. Be sure that he is able to learn all of these before starting with a new set. Always use these commands so he will be able to remember them.

Keep in mind your dog’s genetic makeup. Some breeds have their specializations so you must concentrate on harnessing their skills and capabilities.

Take note of the duration of time when teaching a new command. Don’t bombard your dog with several commands all at the same time. Also make sure that you use the praise or reward and punishment method. Your voice should likewise sound positive when giving praises and be unyielding when there is a need to reprimand him.

Ensure that your dog is physically comfortable as the training exercises are performed. Dogs get tired easily so don’t strain him that much.

Execute the dog obedience training sessions in a distraction-free area. As the response turns positive, gradually add more distractions like bouncing balls, doing the jumping jack, running around, throwing treats to him, and many others. But don’t overdo the use of distractions as it may frighten your pet.

Practice giving commands in a variety of surfaces. Some of these include the cement sidewalks, on sand, on dirt, on the grass-covered lawns, on a chair or table, low wall, logs, and many others.

Give commands while you are walking down the street, while you are in the pet supply outlet, or wherever you may be with your dog.

There is actually no best time of the day to administer the dog obedience training sessions. What matters is that both you and your dog should be up to it, in the mood, and in good physical condition.

How To Master Dog Training

Dogs are no doubt man’s best friends. They are definitely fun to be with and make great companions. Sometimes, they are even considered as part of the family. It certainly feels great to be walking with a dog around either just within the neighborhood or along the beach. But if you happen to have a dog as worse as Marley, the dog in the movie “Marley and Me”, perhaps you’re more stressed than the usual because of your dog’s naughtiness. But why live up with a dog like Marley if you can turn your pet into a well-trained dog? The solution –master dog training. Here are some steps on how to do it:

First, be considerate. You have to remember that a dog is an animal, so unlike humans, it has shorter attention span. You may be able to get its attention now, but a couple of minutes or so it will go back to what it finds interesting. So, try to put yourself into its situation and imagine how frustrating it could be to undergo a dog training class instead of doing more fun activities. Take note that most animals are trained easily when given treats before the training. So, before you enroll your pet in a dog training class, prepare some really good treats as rewards.

Next, be consistent. It is not good to give your pet so many instructions at the same time or worse, give up on teaching it a trick just because it is not able to get it at first. Try to be very consistent in such a way that you will start with the easiest command first like the “sit” command before going for more difficult ones. Once it learned the “sit” command, proceed to others like the “stay” or “come” command.

When giving instructions, make sure that you repeat them from time to time until your dog realizes and understands what you are trying to communicate. Again, do not give too many instructions at once for this will confuse your pet more. Take your time. Now, once your pet learned the trick that you’ve been teaching, give a reward or treat and make sure that you review the trick before jumping into another.

And lastly, of course, be the boss. It is important that your pet recognizes you as its leader; otherwise you’ll end up having a dog that is as hardheaded as Marley. Once your pet recognizes you as the boss, it will be easier for you to make it follow your commands. However, you have to remember that being the boss does not necessarily mean that you have to be harsh to your dog whenever it fails to follow your instructions. Be gentle as possible because this is the most effective way to gain dog training.

Mastering dog training is not as difficult as you think, right? With all these steps in mind, you are off to a successful dog training training. Remember: be considerate, be consistent, and be the boss.

How To Choose The Best Dog Training School
